On August 25, 2020, Kyle Rittenhouse, a 17-year-old from Antioch, Illinois, fatally shot two men and wounded another in Kenosha, Wisconsin during the protests, riots, and civil unrest that followed the shooting of a black man, Jacob Blake, by a white police officer.[1][2] Rittenhouse and the three men he shot were white.[3] Rittenhouse was armed with a semi-automatic[4] AR-15 style rifle[5][6] that he took from his friend, Dominick Black, and both Rittenhouse and Black joined a group of armed men who said they were in Kenosha to protect businesses.[7][8] Rittenhouse said he was there to protect a car dealership from being vandalized and to provide medical aid.[9]

After an earlier confrontation with Kenosha resident Joseph Rosenbaum, who was unarmed, Rittenhouse was followed by Rosenbaum and journalist Richard McGinnis.[10] Racine resident Joshua Ziminski fired a shot into the air nearby, then Rittenhouse turned towards Rosenbaum.[11][12] McGinnis later stated that Rosenbaum had lunged at Rittenhouse and tried to take his rifle, after which Rittenhouse shot Rosenbaum four times at close range, killing him.[13][14] Rittenhouse then ran down the street while being pursued by a crowd of at least a dozen people.[7] Rittenhouse tripped and fell to the ground after being hit in the head, then fired twice at a man who jump kicked him, missing both shots.[15][16] While Rittenhouse was still on the ground, Silver Lake resident Anthony Huber struck him in the shoulder with a skateboard and attempted to take his rifle. Rittenhouse shot Huber once in the chest, killing him.[10][17] West Allis resident Gaige Grosskreutz then approached Rittenhouse while pointing[18][19] a handgun at him,[6] after which Rittenhouse wounded Grosskreutz by shooting him once in the right arm.[17][20]
Rittenhouse was charged with two counts of homicide, one count of attempted homicide, two counts of reckless endangerment, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm, and one count of curfew violation. Rittenhouse's trial took place from November 1 to November 19 of 2021. Judge Bruce Schroeder dismissed the unlawful possession charge and the curfew violation charge during the trial,[21][22] and a unanimous jury found Rittenhouse not guilty of the remaining charges.[23]
